De vertrouwelijke gegevens die statistische autoriteiten van de Unie en de lidstaten voor de productie van officiële Europese en officiële nationale statistieken verzamelen, moeten worden beschermd. Europese statistieken moeten worden ontwikkeld, geproduceerd en verspreid overeenkomstig de statistische beginselen van artikel 338, lid 2, VWEU; nationale statistieken moeten ook aan het lidstatelijke recht voldoen. Verordening (EG) nr. 223/2009 van het Europees Parlement en de Raad (16), bevatten nadere specificaties betreffende de statistische geheimhoudingsplicht voor Europese statistieken.
